Debbie Mackey (known as Mrs. Debbie to the students) began her fun with Pagosa Springs Elementary School as a part-time para-professional in 2nd grade. In a couple of years she went full time and began to work with Special Education, where she served 7 years. She worked mainly with Autistic children. It was a journey she will always remember. It was filled with many learning opportunities, fun filled field trips and many new beginning with her students.
Autism was a learning experience in which she was fortunate to receive some valuable training by Dr. Pat Rydel of the Rocky Mountain Autism Institute and San Jan BOCES.
Her adventure began 8 years ago when she next took the opportunity of coordinating the Library and becoming the Media Specialist. It seems to be a constant revolving door of students (and some former students) visiting the library, searching for fun through books. With over 14,000 books to choose from, students can enjoy adventure, mystery, travel and just "good ole fun". Not to get bored with adventure, twice a year the students, families, and friends of the community are treated to Book Fairs which can take you to some fare out places. As summer nears and the students prepare for the vacation months that lie ahead, mid May rings the Book Swap in the Library. All year long, Mrs. Debbie collects gently used books that have been donated to Pagosa Springs Elementary and are readied for the Book Swap where the students are able to choose books to take home for the summer reading months.
