Lab Specialist/Teacher Aide

Mrs Plummer-Ashbaugh grew up in Des Moines, Iowa.  While in High School she  was involved in Civil Air Patrol, Auxiliary of the United States Air Force and  earned the Spaatz Award the highest cadet award. It was through Civil Air Patrol that she started to learn how to fly an airplane.   She was also a Page for the Iowa House of Representatives her senior year in High School.   After high School, Julie was off to College at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida.   After college while waiting to attend Officer Training School with the Air Force, Julie worked at Space Camp in Titusville, Florida where she taught 4th through 6th graders about the space program.   After attending  Officer Training School she was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force as a Supply Officer and was off to Soesterberg AB, The Netherlands.  Next, she went to RAF Mildenhall, England.  Julie’s next move brought her to Colorado Springs where she was a Software Evaluator doing operational testing for Cheyenne Mountain Upgrade program, GPS Satellites, and Year 2000 rollover.  Right after moving to Colorado Springs, she met and married her husband,  Alan Ashbaugh.   On a trip to Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon they drove through Pagosa Springs and saw a big billboard saying, “35 acre lots for sale”, so on their way back home they spent a few days and bought their 35 acres here in Pagosa Springs..  Subsequently, they we moved to the following locations with the Air Force where Julie  did various jobs mostly with Logistics: Warner Robins, GA;  Okinawa, Japan; San Angelo, Texas, Ramstein AB, Germany, and Yokota AB (Tokyo), Japan.  On 1 June 2012, after serving twenty-three years on active duty, Julie retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel and  moved back to Colorado Springs, CO.   One of her additional duties while stationed at Yokota was the School Liaison Office. While working with the the various principals there, they and her children convinced her  to be part of the Troops to Teachers Program and become a teacher, so she went back to school to earn her Colorado teaching Certificate for Secondary Math.   For the past three years, she taught at Discovery Canyon Campus High School in Colorado Springs.  The first two years,  Julie was in the science department teaching Fundamental and Operations of Flight.  During her third year, she was was in both the science and math department teaching Fundamental and Operations of Flight,  Algebra, Geometry, and Business Finance.  May 2014, they broke ground on building their house here in Pagosa Springs.  They received their certificate of occupancy in August 2016, and moved here into their new house shortly after receiving it.  Mrs Plummer-Ashbaugh has  two kids, Ally (14) and David (12).
